- The most important point when planning an application is awareness of wind direction and the potential for drift.
- Be aware of your surroundings: Are there homes, schools, or other public buildings nearby?
- Where is nearest established field? Is it downwind or downhill of current application site?
- Is there activity in nearby or adjacent fields? If so, have workers been informed of fumigant application operations?
- What are the weather conditions for the next 48-hours? Do they promote the development of inversions?
- During inversions, fumigant vapors may not disperse but will hug the ground and travel for long distances. Foggy mornings and still, cloudless nights are indicators.
- Schedule applications of fumigants containing chloropicrin carefully; stop applying by early afternoon, especially with the possibility of an inversion.
- Do not disturb the tarp once it has been laid as this will encourage unwanted release of fumigant vapors.
